this is the packaging image for a 1970s butterick embroidery transfer. i'm not ashamed to admit that i have an almost identical shirt which i found at the salvation army when i was 14 and wore with pride (mine actually donned an array of retro mushrooms, yes it did).
i wish it were still cool for a man to sport a hand-embroidered palm tree on his groin.

pshh, no thanks chaser knock-off, i scored myself a real guy last week (and for $45 less). thank you buffalo exchange for fulfilling all of my vintage hopes and dreams. and a nod to you too, david lee roth.
why oh why must fashion continue to exploit the most bewitching of animals? butterflies, the owl...i believe deer had a moment there, specifically with jewelry. antlers & feathers too, all be they mere accessories of animals themselves (no pun intended). then generally, the "put a bird on it" phenomenon (and i do admit i have a silk blouse with miniature swallows adorning it that i regrettably have an aversion to). and now the fox. oh dear, the fox. i remember the only time i had ever seen one growing up; i was driving on the darkened back roads of rural connecticut. i came to a hault to watch a stark white fox slowly cross my path. it looked at me. it was beautiful. but harper's bazaar has deemed foxes to be "the fashion fauna of the season." i'm sorry, but this sentence nauseates me. as much as i love the look of the deyrolle pour opening ceremony full-length dress seen here (retailing at $360.00), my heart pangs with a wee bit of sadness that another of the animal kingdom will now lose its sense of magic by being overly manipulated and beaten to a pulp, all in the name of fashion. all i can say now is pleaseplease don't take my bison from me!

now, i love me the resurrection of heinously fun early nineties trends, be they navajo prints, granny boots, denim cutoffs, lace, cutouts, crucifixes or crystals. but pardon me old-fashioned for seeing this and only feeling gypped for the schmuck who purchases a partial shirt. there was a drunken incident that occurred in 1990 with a cracked out jersey girl and a pair of scissors; this was an unfortunate event that should remain in the past (along with the one that led to the conception of the sleeveless turtleneck). didn't anyone see the documentary film wildwood, nj? the teenager who wore this top beat and killed a girl for shits & giggles. enough said.

i am seriously losing it for the work of alidra alić, a contemporary jeweler based out of denmark. whimsical and unique, her pieces are stunning...as if having emerged from some peculiarly unsettling fairy tale. while some of the pieces are just plain lovely, others (particularly those from her flora line), are beautifully grotesque, having a sort of life of their own and reminding me of contorted dreams, georgia o'keeffe meets salvador dali. i am in love. also, terribly envious.

give me a head with hair

let me just preface this by saying that i am fully aware of and proudly admit to my astounding nerd-dom when it comes to theater and musicals. i am unabashed in proclaiming my affinity in particular for those (or anything for that matter) consisting of hippies aplenty, donned in fringe and wildflowers and afros, high on the fumes of revolt, gyrating, and swooning in worship to the sun and moon. and thus, yet another way for me to feed the time-warp frankenstein that since age 10 has made it entirely apparent that i was born in the wrong decade.
"hair" is coming to the colonial theater in boston on March 22nd, courtesy of broadway across america. i am squealing. on the inside. shut up.
