i need a bicycle. you know, to get me places. i know nothing about bicycles. help.

as always, michelle williams is stunning. this editorial was styled by karl templer and photographed by mikael jansson for interview magazine, may 2011. the dream-like quality of these cool, washed-out images are haunting, the dresses are my personal dream (dang am i a sucker for a peter-pan collar), and michelle williams evokes a modern-day mia farrow. just perfect.

later this year michelle will be playing marilyn monroe (meh), but her current film, meek's cutoff, looks excellent. take a gander:

when i recently discovered that the complete series of my so called life was a "watch instantly" option on netflix, i knew that the next couple weeks of my life would be consumed, consumed with the injustices of adolescence, the nostalgia of flannel and combat boots and likes and okays? and sweet catalano dreams. and they were, wholly. i know that many children of the nineties have sung their praises for the show and brought it to cult-worshiped status, but it was rightfully so. i don't believe there has been anything comparable since, at least on such a relatable level. re-watching all of the episodes as an adult was a strange experience; finding angela chase's melodramatic, hormonal revelations oddly poignant, even in my current state of mind. i suppose it just still blows my mind that claire danes was only fifteen yet still able to emote such depth. talk about an old soul. and ohh that crying chin tremble gets me every time. she remains one of my favorites.

sometimes someone says something really small, and it just fits right into this empty place in your heart.

for years of my adulthood i have been endlessly searching for a single soul with whom i could share the serious nostalgia i have for this educational television series, encyclopedia, which aired on HBO back in 1988 (when i was five years old). granted, our family only subscribed to HBO on and off throughout my childhood given the additional costs and my parents' general lack of excess bling, it was nevertheless a show i religiously watched. it aired bright and early at 7am, and i would watch it wide-eyed as i ate my breakfast. the show was like children's sketch-comedy, each episode concentrating on one letter of the alphabet; encyclopedic words were chosen and acted out in quirky, clever ways. as a child, i was most captivated by the goofy ethyl eichelberger, who as it turns out was a classically trained dramatic actor and drag performer. i've just discovered that he was diagnosed with AIDS (likely before the show began airing) and ultimately commit suicide in 1990 due to his inability to tolerate the prescribed medicine. so awful. i did also adore jim fyfe and faith prince, the melodramatic, squealing lady who later went on to win a tony award in 1992 for her role as adelaide in the revival of guys and dolls.

the writing was incredible (the crew consisting of two former saturday night live writers); the show held attention with its charismatic and outlandish characters (often times involving cross-dressing come to think of it), equally as enjoyable for adults. these skits were sometimes interjected with short educational songs by their "house band" of sorts, betty (three sassy, guitar-clad, hair-permed ladies). props to HBO, seriously. there has literally come the point in any relationship i have had when i desperately inquire as to whether or not they remember this series; i had no idea how obscure it was. the show only aired for a few years, only on HBO, and only in the early mornings and evenings. it's no wonder i've found myself clinging to it, along with the rest of my rapidly fleeting early childhood memories. the show was never released on dvd and there is minimal information to be found on the internet, but thank goodness for youtube because the fuzzy blips i could recall were beginning to seem like dreams. re-watching these clips and especially listening to the outro theme accesses a part of my memory that makes my hair stand on end and my gut ache with weirdness. i can see our old living room. smell the wood panels. feel the give of our old, retro-heinous couch. and the sound of my mother cooking my breakfast in the next room.
